POSITIVE
SELF-HELP IS DOING YOUR PART SO THAT GOD CAN DO HIS
Trying to pull yourself up
by your own bootstraps is doing things the hard way and is the recipe
for failure and frustration.
Positive self-help is more
than pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. It's you doing
your part so that God can do His. It's getting an entirely new way
of thinking which results in a new life.
The foundation for positive self-help is a
positive self that is in agreement with God about who you are and what
you can do with your life. You are a work in progress, and when
you do your part, you can be sure that God will do His. But first
you must step up to the plate and do those things that only you can do.
Doing your part is the essence of self-help. When you do your
part, you give God something to work with. Until you do your part,
God is limited in what he can accomplish on your behalf.
Not all self-help is created equal, and there is
plenty of psychobabel in the bookstores designed to sell books
irrespective of whether you have any benefit from reading them.
Some self-help literature makes you feel better even when you are not
making any real progress. Psychobabel
points you in the right direction, but does not give you the power to
make the trip.
No matter how fast you run, if it is in the wrong direction, you will
never reach your dreams.
If the main reason you are using self-help is to create and project a new image,
you are heading in the wrong direction.
You don't need a new image. You need a new way of thinking and
feeling. You need a new you.
The only way to get a new you is to change the way
you think. You must change the way you think about who you are and
what you can do with your life. Positive self-help is about
becoming a new person by changing the way you think.
You need to change the way you think about many things. When you
look at your failures, you need to change the way you think. When
you look at your limitations, you need to change the way you think.
When you look at the past, you need to change the way you think.
When you look at the present, you need to change the way you think.
When you look at the future, you need to change the way you think.
You can change anything you want in your life by changing the way you
think.
Positive self-help has three major components.
1.
You develop a
positive self-image and positive self-esteem.
2.
You get in agreement with yourself.
3.
You get in
agreement with God.
A positive self
begins with spiritual birth.
Until you are spiritually alive and dare to call God your Father, you
will not know who you really are - you will not know your true identity.
Until you get in agreement with yourself, you will be dysfunctional with
your mind wanting one thing and your heart wanting another, while your
will flounders in a sea of ambivalence. Until you get in agreement
with God, you miss out on God's dream for your life. You are a
blunt instrument in the hand of a loving God.
A positive self is the starting point in God's master plan for your
life. A positive self in the hands of a loving God can do awesome
things.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF POSITIVE?
The word positive has only been around for about seven hundred years.
According to Merriam-Webster, the first known use of the word positive
was in the 14th century. That was about a hundred years before
Columbus sailed to America. Until then, people did not have a
positive attitude, because the word positive did not exist in the
English language. Before then they had to use other words to
describe a positive attitude. Probably they simply said that
someone had a good attitude.
For me, the word positive means congruent and non-ambivalent.
It's an operational definition signifying that my mind, heart, and will
are all congruent and committed to moving together in a non-ambivalent
fashion to achieve a worthwhile purpose.
All three components of my personality (heart, mind, will) are heading
in the same direction and working together to achieve the same objective.
Congruent is a big word with a simple meaning. The three parts that
create your personality are your mind, heart and will. If those
three components of who you are get in agreement, they are congruent.
They all want the same thing, they are all headed in the same direction,
they are all working together toward the same objective.
All parts of you must work together and head in the same direction if
you want to live your dreams. If your will, mind, and heart are
heading in different directions, then you will be pulled apart and
become dysfunctional because you are not in agreement with yourself.
You must be congruent if you want good things to happen.
If your heart wants one thing and your mind wants another, you are
doomed to a life of failure and frustration. Being congruent
simply means that we are in agreement with ourselves. We want
something with our heart and with our mind, and we are willing to do
whatever it takes to make it happen.
Jesus said that we must love God with all our mind, all our heart, and
all our strength. Our connection with God must involve all parts
of who we are. We have to get in agreement with ourselves about
our relationship with God. When our heart, mind, and will all
connect in a congruent fashion with God, amazing things start to happen.
We are fully connected to the One who runs the universe and who has a
dream for our lives that is perfect for who we are. The switch
suddenly goes on, and the power of God's love flows through our hearts
and minds. We become new people who think new positive thoughts,
take positive actions, and live positive lives. God points us in
the right direction and gives us the power to make the trip.

The Positive Self is non-ambivalent. You are convinced and committed
regardless of the consequences. Your mind is made up and set like
flint. You have a single-minded focus that does not look right,
left or to the back. You know who you are, and you know where you
are going.
Ambivalence is the enemy of a
positive self. The ambivalent attitude is like a wave
in the sea blown by the wind. Whenever the wind changes, the waves
change. You can't be like waves of the ocean if you want to have a
positive mind. External forces don't decide which
direction you sail on the ocean of your dreams. You set your
course, and you keep on sailing regardless of the direction of the wind.
Ambivalent people are never committed to a purpose. They just go
with the flow, and they end up in Nowhere Land. A positive mind is
always non-ambivalent. It is convinced and committed to a course
of action regardless of the consequences. Opposition does not
deter them because it is solid evidence that they are living their
dreams. Storms don't stop them; they conquer them.
Storms simply confirm they are sailing on the ocean of their dreams.
A positive self is for everyone, not just a
privileged few.
Creating a positive self is not a mystery. When you fill your mind with positive things, it
is inevitable you will develop a positive self. It's that simple.
That doesn't mean it is easy, but it does mean it is possible. If
you really want to have a positive self, nobody can stop you.
