CRUISING MALAYSIA
This golden sunset is at the Fort Dickson Marina in Malaysia.
A few days previously we left Raffle's Marina in Singapore where
we had ten days of non-stop fun punctuated at night with
spectacular electrical storms in the Malacca Straits.
After an overnight sail in driving rain and thunderstorms, we
looked forward to a restful night at Fort Dickson. It
doesn't cost an arm and a leg to stay at this marina; the
boom and bust Malaysian economy generated too many slips and not
enough yachts, so the cruising sailor is always welcome.
A large colonial style hotel graces the docks. Once you
register at the Marina, it's time to soak in the pool.
If Fort Dickson was a fortune cookie, it would predict affordable
adventures all the way to Langkawi. We anchored off Chinese
stilt villages built over the water, visited
spectacular Buddhist temples, and explored colonial
fortresses along the coast.
Langkawi is the crown jewel of Malaysian cruising. Limestone
cliffs rise out of the sea, and pristine beaches run down
Langkawi's western shore. There are dozens of secure
anchorages in places of spectacular beauty, and when you want to
rejoin civilization, affordable marinas are close at hand.
Langkawi is more than a cruising destination; it's a place where I
could happily spend the rest of my sailing days.
