LAND ROVER DREAMS
For more than fifteen years, I have had Land Rover Dreams.
The first time I saw a fully loaded, expeditionary equipped
Defender driving in the sand, I was hooked on Land Rovers.
So far, I have owned five Defenders, and I still have two that are
ready for action - ready to live my dreams.
I had my first three Defenders in Saudi Arabia. I customized
them for expeditionary travel with full length roof racks, long
range fuel tanks, and two spare tires. These awesome
vehicles took us out in the desert nearly every weekend eight
months out of the year. We camped in the desert between
sixty and ninety nights annually using our Defenders.
Now I'm down to two Defenders. One is parked in New Zealand
and the other in Australia. They have roof racks, two spare
tires, a complete set of spare parts, and they are ready to go.
One day I want to load them into a container and ship them to
Africa for a driving trip around the world.
Now is the hard part - the waiting. Everyday I ask myself
when I should start living my dreams. I already know the
answer. I should do it now.
But it's not as easy as that. I also have other dreams I'm
working on. I have websites to build, podcasts to create,
DVD's to distribute, books to publish, and a positive web ring to
promote. I also have a day job that requires forty hours per
week.
I've got too many dreams and not enough time. I've got
enough dreams to last three lifetimes.
To every dream, there's a time and a place, and right now my Land
Rover Dreams aren't at the top of my list. I've got other
dreams that demand my full attention, and that's ok. As long
as I am living at least one of my dreams, my life is worth living.
If you look at these heavily
loaded Defenders, you will notice that they are parked on the down
slope of the sand dune. We learned from experience that if
we parked on the upslope, our wheels would dig in and we would get
stuck when we tried to move our vehicles.
