THE DEVIL'S MARBLES
On our trip to the Red Center of Australia, we camped at the
Devil's Marbles. According to Aboriginal legend, these large
red granite boulders are the eggs of the Rainbow Serpent.
Fortunately, the serpent never showed up, and that suits me fine.
Any serpent that lays eggs this big is probably no friend of
mine.
You can see the shadow of our trusty Canon XL-1 camera silhouetted
on the boulder as we waited for the Rainbow Serpent to appear.
I'll remember sunset in the Devil's Marbles for as long as I live.
Like all people, I have a photographic mind. Everyone has a
photographic memory and has close to perfect recall.
Anytime we want, we can turn on a slide show that will take
us back in time. My photographic memory is a time machine
that can take me to the Australian outback, to Buddhist temples in
Thailand, or even to a birthday party when I was five years old.
That's the way God made our mind work. We are visual
creatures.
Our mental time machines can also transport us into the future.
I visualized my yacht sailing into Bora Bora for more than ten
years before it actually happened. On the motion picture
screen of my mind, I put my anchor down in paradise in a thousand
anchorages around the world before I even left the dock. I
knew that if I visualized those things in my photographic mind, it
was only a matter of time before I got there. And when I
actually walked down those paths, it was a trip through familiar
territory. I did not stumble and was never confused. I
knew exactly where I was. I had walked those paths so many
times before in my mind, it was like the pathway home.
